Expecting stormy weather in our region today on and off the ice. The Shawinigan Cataractes, this year's hosts for the Memorial Cup face off against the reigning Memorial Cup champions Saint John Sea Dogs tonight at Harbour Station.
Pre-Game Ceremony-
In recognition of their performances at recent international tournaments, the Saint John Sea Dogs will host a pre-game ceremony tonight to honour seven players.
Four Sea Dogs players represented their countries at the World Junior Hockey Championship recently, including bronze medalists Jonathan Huberdeau and Nathan Beaulieu of Canada. Tomas Jurco (Slovakia) also competed at the world juniors as did Charlie Coyle (USA), who will make his Quebec Major Junior Hockey League debut Thursday. Coyle, a six-foot-two, 207-pound forward from Weymouth, Mass., will join his three new teammates in being recognized before Thursday’s 7 p.m. game against the Shawinigan Cataractes.
Team Canada members Michael Bournival and Brandon Gormley of the Cataractes will be honoured as well.
The Sea Dogs had one other representative wearing the Maple Leaf over the Christmas holidays. Rookie Oliver Cooper skated for Team Atlantic at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
All seven players will receive a plaque from the Sea Dogs for their efforts in representing their countries on the international stage. In addition, Sea Dogs Chairman and CEO will join President Wayne Long in presenting Huberdeau and Beaulieu with official Team Canada jerseys at centre ice.

World Under-17 experience invaluable for Oliver Cooper
Even though he didn’t win a medal, it was an invaluable experience for Fredericton native and Saint John Sea Dogs Oliver Cooper, getting to play for Team Atlantic at this year’s World Under-17 Challenge in Windsor, Ont.
“It gives you a taste of all the players you’re up against,’’ the Saint John Sea Dogs rookie said in an article by Scott Briggs in the Telegraph Journal.. “It’s kind of an eye-opener. There’s some tough competition.’’
Playing on a line with Halifax Mooseheads freshman Nathan MacKinnon in three of fives games. MacKinnon, projected as an early pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, set up Cooper for the game-winning goal in a 4-3 victory over Germany during the round-robin.
About MacKinnon, Cooper commented ,“He’s so explosive, He takes two strides and he’s at full speed. He’s unreal; he’s going to be something. He does things that no one else even thinks of doing. He had a lot of pressure on him, but I think he handled it well.’’
“I think beating (two) countries was a big accomplishment,’’ Cooper said. “I think beating Ontario might have felt a little bit better, but we were proud (of our effort).’’
Aside from facing the top talent in his age division, Cooper had to cope with trade rumours.
“Some of the guys were joking with me and asking me where I was going, but I tried not to think about it,’’ he said “It was definitely in the back of my mind, but I’m glad I’m staying here.
“It couldn’t have worked out better because I’m still here and I’m happy. This is where I want to be for the rest of my career.’’
So far, Cooper is having a strong season, notching nine goals and 20 points in 39 games.
“We’re real happy with his development,’’ Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said. “He’s a big, strong kid and we just expect he’s going to get better. From our experience with the young kids, their second half is even better than their first.
“He’s a great kid and he’s getting better every day. He works hard for us and we’re happy with his character and with everything he’s done
